A Minnesota charter academy that prides itself on “preparing young people for life” has expelled a first grader with speech disabilities for refusing to wear a mask.
The board at St. Croix Preparatory Academy in Stillwater voted unanimously on December 2 to expel the boy, despite the existence of an IEP (individualized education program) for delayed speech and other learning issues. His parents had petitioned for weeks against the school’s mask mandate which went into effect on September 7.
“The impact on my son has been heart-wrenching to watch,” said Jake Lee, the boy’s father. “Even two nights ago, he showed his continued confusion by asking ‘wait, am I never going back to my class?’ He misses his classmates, but especially his teachers,” said Lee.
