CHICAGO – Almost 11,000 Cook County homeowners could lose their homes if they don't pay their unpaid property taxes by May 8th, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas warned at a press conference that received little media attention the last week of February.
While warning of over 57,000 resident and business property owners on the verge of losing their properties for being 12 months late in paying their Cook County property taxes, Pappas called for legislation to allow the tax payment deadline to be extended four months.
The legislation Pappas was encouraging is SB 3356, sponsored by Senator Elgie Sims Jr and co-sponsored by seven other Democrat senators.
Pappas said the 57,515 property owners facing scavenger auction is 17,000 more than last year. At the press conference, Pappas was especially concerned that a vast majority of the homeowners facing loss of their property owed the county less than $1000.
