CHICAGO – Remember when "moderate" Republican Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law protections for immigrants living in Illinois that had chosen to evade the federal immigration system? The law made Illinois a "sanctuary state" where law enforcement officials would be no longer required to advise immigration officials of a person's immigration status that had entered their system.
Friday, President Trump revealed the possibility that so-called "sanctuary cities" (and or states we presume) would be where the border patrol would send the thousands of immigrants claiming asylum in the U.S. that are over-burdening border towns in Texas and California.
"Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed as reported, giving strong considerations to placing illegal immigrants in Sanctuary cities only …" Trump wrote.
Thus, the astronomical expenses of thousands of immigrants' health care, housing, education, meals and needs would fall onto the cities that have "Open Borders, Open Arms" policy:
However, Governor Rauner insisted time and time again that Illinois was not a sanctuary state.
"The bill I signed did not make Illinois a sanctuary … period, end of story," Governor Bruce Rauner told a group of Republicans gathered in Palos Park during the 2018 campaign.
However, his rhetoric did not match the instructions given to local law enforcement – who were told that they did not need to contact federal immigration law enforcement before allowing an undocumented person arrested for suspicion of a crime to leave custody.
More to come …
