I was a Republican state senator in Illinois for six years and I was elected as a Reagan delegate from Illinois to the 1980 Convention in Detroit. Although I have made no secret about my worries about Donald Trump as a candidate and potential president, I still understand the intense loyalty and devotion of Republicans who like Donald Trump and I respect that loyalty. But that is the reason why I think that Trump fans deserve better than Trump himself is giving them right now.
Trump fans deserve a serious campaign and a candidate who can be coherent even when he is not reading from a teleprompter. But when Trump cannot read from a teleprompter such as during the first debate, he tends to ramble because the thinks he appears more authentic than his over-scripted opponent Hillary Clinton.
But when he is not reading from a teleprompter, his comments get more incoherent. For example, in the first half of a sentence he will say he rejects the use of nuclear weapons as a first strike option but in the second half of the same sentence he says he will not rule out a first strike using nukes. That is a contradiction plain and simple that makes me wonder if he understands anything about nuclear weapons.
Trump's own fans deserve better than Trump himself is able to give them because he is not able to stay off personal business anecdotes that have nothing to do with the campaign issues.
Again, I respect the intense loyalty of those of you who are passionately for Donald Trump and I admire your devotion. So let's all pray that he can learn how to give coherent answers all the time because you Trump fans deserve that and our country deserves that if he wins on Nov. 8.
