SPRINGFIELD – Republican state Senator Kyle McCarter (Lebanon) is not happy with the "massive tax increase" Democrat and Republican leadership are preparing to thrust onto Illinois taxpayers, he said on his Facebook page Wednesday.
"This is an opportunity to pick your pockets," McCarter said about one part of the plan.
Party leaders are finding creative ways to take two weeks pay from Illinois workers to fund an income tax hike without an attempt to shrink the size of government, and McCarter's fed up with the scheme being rushed through the Illinois General Assembly.
"We'll have one day to hear 12 bills" in the Illinois Senate, he said. "Hundreds and hundreds of pages that I guarantee not everyone has read."
McCarter pointed to three parts of the proposal being considered.
- It raises income taxes to the 2011 level, taking two weeks pay from every taxpayer in Illinois.
- It delivers new sales taxes on an array of services such as landscaping, grasscutting,towing, car repairing, any kind of entertainment, including on cable and satellite tv services.
- It establishes a new "business opportunity" payroll tax for small businesses – businesses that are already struggling in Illinois.
"We could have avoided this," McCarter said. "We could have balanced the budget by today if we had followed the plan I proposed in 2011."
