CHICAGO – Chicago-based Illinois Policy Institute has reviewed the budget proposal that the Illinois General Assembly will be considering next week when they return to the state Capitol at Governor Rauner's beckoning.
The Institute says the proposal will not serve the state's taxpayers well, and gives seven reasons, including:
- It hits Illinoisans with over $5 billion in tax hikes.
- It creates a property tax “freeze” time bomb.
- Its spending cap isn’t coupled with reforms.
- It agrees to adopt an expensive education funding plan that won’t help student achievement.
- It forces state taxpayers to bail out Chicago teacher pensions.
- It enacts pension “reforms” that are unconstitutional and will perpetuate Illinois’ crisis.
- It offers few structural spending reforms.
