Schools nationwide held a 17 minute walk out from classes today at 10:00a.m. Students had a 27 minute moment of silence for each student killed last month at the school shooting in Parkland. Florida.
Here at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois about 9:55am students started streaming out two doors on the east side of the building to assemble in the football field. During the moment of silence they released 17 white balloons – one for each victim. At 10:18, the students headed back into the building. Counting media and parents, only about 30 people witnessed the event. I don’t have a count of students who participated but it looked like a large portion of the 3000 students. One parent indicated they sold 800 tee shirts for the event.
Several police cars closed and blocked the street so media, parents, and neighbors were kept about a half a block away. One parent group held signs asking for more gun control.
