WASHINGTON DC – The contentious proceedings surrounding the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh could be seen as history repeating itself – deja vu – of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' experience. It was October of 1991 – 27 years ago – when then-President George H.W. Bush nominated his for the highest court in the land.
Thomas, who confirmed himself as a strict originalist concerning the US Constitution, was too conservative for the Democrat majority. After the committee hearings were complete, at the last moment, a woman by the name of Anita Hill publicly accused Thomas of sexual harassment – something he vehemently denied – just as what is going on with Brett Kavanaugh.
Thomas responded with strong words:
I think something is dreadfully wrong with this country when any person any person in this free country would be subjected to this… This is a circus. This is a national disgrace.
And from my standpoint, as a black American, it is a high tech lynching for uppity blacks who in anyway deign to think for themselves… you will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a US Senate Committee, rather than be hung from a tree…"
