DC – Via five Tweets Friday afternoon, Alaska US Senator Lisa Murkowski revealed she is opposed to calling witnesses in the Trump impeachment trial – the last "moderate" Republican vote that could have allowed a pathway for Democrats to continue their impeachment goal before the 2020 Presidential Election.
With fellow US Senator Lamar Alexander's announcement Thursday night he also opposed calling witnesses to build up the Democrats' case against Donald Trump, the vote in the US Senate is expected to be 51 to 49 against witnesses. Two Republican US Senators – Mitt Romney of Utah and Susan Collins of Maine – defected the Trump camp and committed to side with the Democrats.
Murkowski's vote ensures Leader McConnell that he will be able to block additional witnesses, and the impeachment trial is coming to a close.
Murkowski's reasoning:
This ensures that Leader McConnell will be able to block additional witnesses, and that this long, painful, boring impeachment trial is finally coming to a close. Sen. Murkowski also ripped the effort by the Democrats to demonize Chief Justice John Roberts, and label him as a partisan.
