WASHINGTON – Illinois' senior US Senator Dick Durbin says he will be re-introducing a bill in the upcoming legislative session that some say would make Trump supporting rallies be deemed potential "domestic terrorism." Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) is co-sponsoring in the US House.
Durbin said in a statement, "Our bill would establish offices to combat domestic terrorism with the Department of Justice, FBI and Homeland Security. It would require to regularly assess domestic terrorism threat."
The bill passed the US House last fall and stalled in the US Senate. With the US Senate evenly split 50-50, Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris will cast deciding votes if there is no majority on particular legislative efforts. Durbin is likely t
o be the chairman of the US Senate Judiciary Committee when the new Congress is sworn in with a Democrat majority.
Republican Mark Curran, who challenged Durbin in the last election, commented on Durbin's effort in a Facebook page post:
"Sen Dick Durbin has lost his mind," Curran wrote. "Now he wants to pass legislation to prevent MAGA rallies and deem them as terrorism?"
Curran continued: "This man is a dictator. Total communist."
Curran called for calls to flood into Durbin's offices Monday.
