LOUISVILLE – Gubernatorial candidate state Senator Darren Bailey (R-Louisville) is calling for Illinois to reform its ballot system.
"My team and I are dedicated to ensuring the integrity of our election process in Illinois. Thousands of Illinoisans are concerned with the process, and we must work to improve and restore confidence in our elections moving forward. This means we put in place common-sense processes that make it easy for Illinoisans to register and vote and easy for us to identify and eliminate any potential fraud," he said in a statement.
He introduced legislation with four specific recommendations:
- Annual Cleaning of Voter Rolls—Every Year
- Digital Tracking of Every Ballot for Individuals • Any voter who has requested a mail-in ballot, or is on the permanent mail-in ballot list, can track their ballot through the election process—from the time it leaves the printer, to when it is received back in the County Clerk’s office
- Regular Audits of the Illinois Election System • 1% audit of voter signatures and ballots for each election (municipal, primary, and general)
- Mandatory Voter ID • Free state photo ID for all citizens of Illinois who do not already have a driver’s license, and want an ID
"These are necessary steps to ensure voter integrity and restore confidence in our election system, so every Illinoisan can ensure their ballot is counted, and their voice is heard. As a Senator and as your next Governor, I'll always fight for fair, honest, and transparent elections and to ensure the precious right to vote for every Illinoisan."
