In a highly anticipated speech, former President Donald J. Trump made it official and announced on Tuesday evening that he is running for President of the United States in front of a packed ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” former President Trump said.
Trump began his speech talking about all of the many successes during his first presidential administration: a strong economy, a secure border, a more peaceful world and holding China accountable by forcing them to pay tariffs and taxes.
“The world was at peace. America was prospering, and our country was on track for an amazing future – because I made big promises to the American people and, unlike other Presidents, I kept my promises.”
Trump then pivoted and directed his criticism towards President Biden and his failed policies.
“Two years ago, we were a great nation and soon we will be a great nation again,” said President Trump. “The decline of America is being forced upon us by Biden and the radical left lunatics running our government right into the ground. This decline is not a fate we must accept when given the choice.”
Just hours before Trump’s speech, it was announced that the Republicans had secured the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Earlier in the day, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy earned the GOP nomination for Speaker of the House, beating Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs by a vote of 188-31. Republican members voted by secret ballot during their Caucus meeting. McCarthy only needed a simple majority to win.
