On Wednesday, Naperville city councilman Josh McBroom joined Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk as a guest on the Charlie Kirk Show to discuss his viral moment during a recent city council meeting where he challenged local residents and colleagues who support Illinois’ sanctuary state status – to house the illegal immigrants in their own homes – creating an immediate backlash that generated instant local and national media attention.
Earlier in the day – just hours before his appearance on the Charlie Kirk Show, McBroom sent a letter to Texas Republican Gov. Gregg Abbott, and shared it exclusively with Illinois Review. In the letter, he explains,
“On January 16th, during our monthly city council meeting, I proposed an idea that I never imagined would gain national attention and go viral on the internet – leading to local and national television interviews and coverage. And what was my idea? As an unapologetic conservative Republican – I made it clear during our meeting that in no uncertain terms am I willing to use taxpayer dollars to house and aid a potential influx of migrants to our community. I also suggested creating a sign-up sheet for Naperville homes willing to house migrants at their own expense.”
In the letter to the Texas governor, McBroom admits that it was a bold and “provocative” statement – and that ever since his proposal went viral, the liberal mainstream media have been trying to falsely portray him as a pro-illegal immigrant, Democratic politician.
“Regrettably, the mainstream media was quick to falsely portray me as an open-border liberal who was inviting migrants into our community – a narrative so blatantly false that it was shocking to me that they would even run with that kind of story.”
The city councilman said that no one has taken him up on his offer to house the migrants – and the point he was trying to communicate was the hypocrisy of the entire situation, writing,
“Many of my colleagues and fellow residents are quick to support the idea of welcoming and supporting migrants, but no one is willing to invite them into their own home. And my statement proved that.”
McBroom then concluded his letter with a challenge to his Democratic friends and colleagues who support the idea of welcoming the migrants into the community:
“Where is the compassion for the nearly 900 people who died crossing the border last year? Where’s the compassion for the thousands of families sent to Chicago who are now homeless in winter? Where’s the compassion for those trafficked by cartels? Where’s the compassion for our homeless citizens and veterans, as public services shift to non-US citizens? And where’s the compassion for U.S. overdoses from fentanyl flowing into the country from our southern border?”
McBroom then concluded with, “This to me, is not compassion and this is not love.”
The first-term councilman then thanked Gov. Abbott for his leadership:
“I want to thank you, Governor, for your leadership at such a crucial time in our nation’s history. You are a political lightning rod for the leftist liberals, but you have every right to make decisions and bus migrants out of your state to protect the nearly 30 million residents living in Texas. The Biden “open border” policy is making our communities less safe and we’re seeing crime skyrocket because of the migrant crisis.”
Since McBroom’s viral moment – the husband and father of three boys shared with this publication that he’s received threats from anonymous sources.
As conflicts intensify in the Middle East and the crisis on the southern border is raising legitimate national security concerns – U.S. Customs and Border Protection are reporting that an estimated 151 individuals on the FBI’s terror watch list have been caught trying to cross into the United States illegally this year alone – representing an all time high along the southern border as Chicago politicians scramble to address the migrant crisis now plaguing the city.
National security experts on both sides of the aisle acknowledge the safety concerns with so many crossing into the country illegally – and the problems this creates for local communities who are trying to keep their residents safe.
And it’s been reported that Chicago – a sanctuary city – has seen an 11,000 percent increase in arrests of Venezuelan migrants since President Joe Biden opened up our southern border.
It’s estimated that over 20,000 migrants have arrived in Chicago in the last year, costing more than $400 million – with 25 buses arriving each day dropping off an average of 1,250 migrants around the city and various surrounding communities.
The next Naperville City Council meeting is February 6th at 7:00 pm.
